An evening of culinary delights, auction action and fashion flair spelled success for the first-ever Designs of Hope event in Atlanta, a UNICEF fund-raiser that was initiated by the InterContinental Hotels Group Americas region.

The November event raised more than US $105,000 for the Southeast regional chapter of the United States Fund for UNICEF, surpassing its original US $100K goal. InterContinental Hotels Group co-presented the event with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. Other major sponsors who donated $15,000 or more for the event included The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, M.A.C.

Cosmetics, Until There's A Cure Foundation, Elton John AIDS Foundation and Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts.

Attendees at the sell-out event paid $150 a person to enjoy a gourmet meal, with each of the four courses prepared by the chef of a leading Atlanta restaurant. The evening began with a silent auction during the cocktail hour that featured everything from electronics and sports packages to jewelry and fine art. A live auction held between dinner courses showcased Crowne Plaza and InterContinental hotels worldwide through an array of luxury vacation packages. Sir Elton John, who lent his name as honorary chairman for the event, also donated for auction two Versace jackets that he had worn during performances.

The centerpiece of the evening was a high-energy fashion show highlighting the talents of ethnically diverse, up-and-coming local Atlanta designers. Celebrity models who strutted their stuff on the runway included the hosts of several Turner Broadcasting System television programs and former members of the Atlanta Falcons football team.

Vicki Gordon, senior vice president of Corporate Affairs for the InterContinental Hotels Group Americas region and Designs of Hope event chairman, said that the success of the event had spurred its organizers to immediately begin planning for a 2003 event. "The Designs of Hope event more than met our expectations, as a means for bringing the Atlanta community together to celebrate our many cultures and diversity, while supporting the outstanding global work of UNICEF. We hope to make this event a fixture on the annual Atlanta charity fund-raising scene."

Proceeds from Designs of Hope will benefit the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's programs to provide care and support of orphans and children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.
